Stealing Fire

Brief Summary

The deepest argument of Stealing Fire is that human beings have access to states of consciousness far richer and more useful than ordinary waking awareness, that these states have been studied and pursued throughout human history under the labels of mysticism, ecstasy, flow, and spiritual experience, and that for the first time in history we have the scientific tools to understand them, the technological tools to produce them more safely, and the cultural openness to discuss them without dismissal or shame. The states themselves aren't new — what's new is the prospect of democratized, evidence-based access to them. Whether that prospect actually delivers on its promise depends on choices that haven't yet been made: about regulation, about ethics, about who gets access and who profits, and about whether the tools of neuroscience will be used to liberate or to manipulate.

What makes the book valuable, despite its occasional overreach, is the framework it offers for thinking about peak states as a coherent territory rather than a scattered set of unrelated experiences. By identifying the shared neurological and phenomenological signatures of flow, group flow, psychedelic experience, and contemplative ecstasy, Kotler and Wheal give readers a vocabulary for understanding what they're seeking and a map for finding it more deliberately. They also offer something important to skeptics — a serious, science-grounded case for taking these states seriously as practical tools for healing, creativity, and growth, rather than as mystical fantasies or recreational escapes. The book's most enduring contribution may simply be the permission it gives ordinary people to pursue extraordinary experiences with curiosity and care, to treat their own consciousness as a frontier worth exploring, and to do so with the same rigor and respect they would bring to any other serious undertaking.

About the Author

Steven Kotler is an American author, journalist, and entrepreneur who has spent much of his career studying high performance and human potential. His books include The Rise of Superman (a study of flow states in extreme athletes), Bold (co-written with Peter Diamandis on entrepreneurship and exponential technologies), The Art of Impossible, and The Future Is Faster Than You Think. He is the founder and executive director of the Flow Research Collective, a research and training organization focused on the science of peak performance, and his journalism has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Wired, Forbes, Atlantic Monthly, and many other publications. Kotler's work consistently sits at the intersection of cognitive science, performance psychology, and emerging technology.

Jamie Wheal is an executive coach, author, and the co-founder of the Flow Genome Project, an organization dedicated to studying ultimate human performance. His training programs have been used by U.S. Special Forces operators, Olympic athletes, Fortune 500 executives, and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. After Stealing Fire, he wrote Recapture the Rapture (2021), which extended the book's concerns into a broader cultural and political analysis of meaning-making in modern life. Wheal speaks frequently on the topic of peak states and the future of human potential, and his work tends to combine practical training methodology with cultural and historical analysis. Together, Kotler and Wheal have positioned themselves as among the most prominent popularizers of what is sometimes called the "human performance" or "peak performance" movement, building a bridge between academic researchers, contemplative traditions, and the practical concerns of high-performing professionals.
