Proof of Heaven

Brief Summary

Proof of Heaven makes the case that the most consequential lessons of one neurosurgeon's improbable survival are not medical at all — that a man whose neocortex was offline for seven days nonetheless came back with detailed, coherent, emotionally charged memories of three distinct realms, an unconditional message of love, and a direct encounter with a benevolent intelligence, and that the implications of this fact, if taken seriously, gently dissolve the rigid materialism on which modern neuroscience has often depended; the book argues, with the methodological care of an insider who knows exactly what the standard explanations would say and finds them inadequate in his own case, that consciousness is more fundamental than the brain that filters it, that physical death is therefore not the dissolution it appears to be, and that the proper response to this realization is neither religious dogma nor scientific dismissal but a humble, sustained inquiry into the nature of awareness that takes both the laboratory and the testimony of the dying and the nearly-dead with equal seriousness.

About the Author

Eben Alexander III, M.D., is an American neurosurgeon and author whose 2008 near-death experience following bacterial meningitis became the subject of his bestselling memoir Proof of Heaven. Born in 1953 in Charlotte, North Carolina, he was adopted as an infant by Eben Alexander Jr., himself a prominent neurosurgeon, and was raised in a family that valued both scientific rigor and quiet civic responsibility. He earned his bachelor's degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his M.D. at Duke University School of Medicine, after which he completed a neurosurgical residency at Duke followed by fellowships in cerebrovascular neurosurgery in Newcastle, England. He spent fifteen years on the academic neurosurgical faculty of Harvard Medical School, primarily at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Boston, where his clinical and research focus included stereotactic radiosurgery for cerebrovascular and skull base disorders. He authored or co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles, presented at numerous international neuroscience conferences, and contributed to research that helped establish the protocols for treating arteriovenous malformations and other vascular conditions of the brain. After his 2008 illness and his subsequent transition out of operative practice, he turned increasingly to writing and speaking about consciousness, near-death experiences, and the relationship between science and spirituality. Proof of Heaven, published in 2012, spent more than two years on the New York Times bestseller list, sold more than two million copies, and was translated into more than forty languages. He has followed it with The Map of Heaven (2014), Living in a Mindful Universe (2017, co-written with Karen Newell), and Seeking Heaven (2013), and he continues to lecture internationally on the implications of his experience for the scientific study of consciousness. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Great product. Have used them for a long time. One of my favorite things about them is that they are able to summarize a whole book into just 10 minutes.
