Guns, Germs, and Steel

Brief Summary

Guns, Germs, and Steel remains one of the most ambitious and influential works of popular history of the late twentieth century. Its core contribution is the insistence that the shape of human history reflects accidents of geography and biology rather than the inherent superiority of any people or civilization — an argument that was both intellectually serious and morally necessary at the time it was made, and that retains its importance. The book traces a long causal chain from the distribution of domesticable plants and animals to the food surpluses that freed specialists from subsistence labor, to the technological and organizational advantages that Eurasian societies accumulated over millennia, to the diseases that devastated peoples who had never encountered them. Whatever the book's limitations — and they are real — Diamond demonstrated that big historical questions deserve rigorous structural answers, and that the default explanations relying on racial or cultural hierarchy are not only offensive but empirically wrong.

About the Author

Jared Diamond is an American scientist and author whose career has spanned physiology, ornithology, ecology, and anthropology. He completed his doctorate in physiology at Cambridge University and has spent decades conducting field research in New Guinea, where his observations of local communities first prompted the questions that would animate Guns, Germs, and Steel. He is a professor of geography at the University of California, Los Angeles. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in 1998 and was adapted into a PBS documentary in 2005. Diamond's other major works include The Third Chimpanzee, an examination of human evolution, and Collapse, which analyzes why some societies fail while others endure. He remains one of the most widely read popular scientists working in the tradition of broad synthetic nonfiction.
