These learned roles— the caretaker, the hero, the peacemaker —follow people into adulthood. They attract or tolerate partners, bosses, and friends who reinforce the same dynamic. Without awareness, they keep repeating the cycle: rescuing, controlling, and losing themselves all over again.

Detachment: The First Step Toward Freedom

Beattie’s concept of detachment with love is the foundation of recovery. She writes, “Detachment means we stop trying to control what we cannot control and start caring for ourselves instead.” It’s about loving people without absorbing their pain or taking responsibility for their choices.

It might mean a woman ending her habit of checking her partner’s phone or whereabouts because she realizes her peace is not tied to his behavior.
