Brief Summary

The House of Hidden Meanings argues, with the patience of an author who is no longer trying to convince anyone of anything, that the spectacular career the world associates with RuPaul Charles was always less interesting than the inner work that made it possible — the long, unglamorous labor of learning to feel the things he had spent a childhood dissociating from, of disentangling his need for love from the men he chose to seek it in, of recognizing that the substances and stages that once promised him power were borrowed forms of it, and of finally constructing, in California with chosen family around him, a kind of belonging he had spent fifty years preparing to inhabit; the book quietly proposes that drag itself is best understood not as escape from the self but as a discipline for studying the self, and that the deepest meaning hidden in any house, including the one a famous person builds for himself, is the integration the occupant has finally managed to achieve.

About the Author

RuPaul Andre Charles is an American drag queen, singer, songwriter, actor, model, author, and television producer whose four-decade career has fundamentally reshaped the cultural standing of drag and queer performance in the United States and around the world. Born in San Diego in 1960 and raised in a Black working-class household, he moved to Atlanta in his late teens, where he honed his craft on the public-access program The American Music Show and in the city's punk and new-wave clubs, before relocating to New York City in the mid-1980s and establishing himself as a fixture of the downtown art and nightlife scene. His 1992 single "Supermodel (You Better Work)" broke through to mainstream audiences, leading to a groundbreaking cosmetics contract with MAC and a long-running radio show with Michelle Visage. In 2009 he launched the reality competition series RuPaul's Drag Race, which has since aired in dozens of international versions, won fifteen Primetime Emmy Awards (including five consecutive wins for RuPaul personally as Outstanding Host), and turned a generation of drag performers into household names. He is also a New York Times bestselling author whose previous books include Lettin' It All Hang Out (1995) and GuRu (2018), and he is the host of the podcast RuPaul: What's the Tee? with Michelle Visage. His honors include induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Drama Desk Special Award, and recognition by Time magazine as one of the most influential people in the world. He lives between Los Angeles and Wyoming with his husband, Georges LeBar, whom he married in 2017 after more than twenty years together. The House of Hidden Meanings, published in 2024, debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list and is widely considered his most personal book.

Great product. Have used them for a long time. One of my favorite things about them is that they are able to summarize a whole book into just 10 minutes.
