Thinking About Running Your Own Trade Business? Check This Out

Posted on 6/5/2026, 6:32:36 AM

Have you always wanted to run your own trade business? It might be that you are fed up with working for other people, so you want to go it alone. This is totally possible, you just need to ensure you have everything you need right from the very start. If you aren’t too sure what that is then you have come to the right place. This article will give you some helpful advice and guidance on the type of things you should have on your business check list. So, check it out below.

Budget

One of the first aspects of any business is funding, without money you won’t be able to get your business off the ground. While you may have heard that you can start a business with no money at all, this tends to be companies that have been handed down the family. If you're starting a brand new business then you will need to work out just how much money you need.

Write a list of everything you need, including prices and amounts. Once you have this, add some extra to allow for emergencies along the way. If you don’t have this money to hand then you can either apply for a business loan or you could work with investors who believe in your company. These options will need repayments, so be confident that you are able to make these.

Employees

There may come a time when you need to hire some new employees to help you run your company successfully. This might not happen instantly, especially if you can manage your workload on your own in the beginning stages. However, once things become too much for you, don’t try and do it alone. This is where mistakes will happen and you don't want to lose your company.

If you don’t want to go through the hiring process yourself then you could always work with a recruitment agency. They will hear what you are looking for and find the right person or people for the jobs you need filling.

Website

You will need to design a website so that customers and clients can find information about you and what services you offer. You might think you don’t need a website, especially if you rely heavily on social media. However, a website is a one stop shop for anything and everything to do with your company. You could also add a chatbot on your page so customers and clients can get answers to queries they may have. This saves them calling you and you needing to reply to them instantly. If you have never designed a website before then you could use the help of a website developer/designer. There will be plenty around, find the one that suits you and your company.

Vehicles

As a trade business you may decide that instead of using your own vehicle then you are going to use company vehicles, if you have employees that also need vehicles then it is worth looking into a fleet. This will work out much cheaper overall to run and rent, rather than each individual having their own car. When you have a fleet of vehicles, you will need to keep them roadworthy and topped up with fuel. You could sign up for a fuel card to ensure your employees are always arriving at jobs on time with fuel in their tank.

Marketing

Finally, something else to consider is marketing. As a new business you will likely be invisible in the early stages of opening, and this won’t be good for anyone. However, if you are a particularly niche business, like trades then you may need to search for the right techniques and strategies. It won’t be one size fits all when it comes to you and your company, how about video marketing and social media. You can use both to explain who you are and what your business is about. There are marketing services out there suitable for home services like plumbing, HVAC repairs, and electricians. Check them out to see if they can help you launch your company and get a good client list going.
