Improving the Cleanliness of Your Commercial Toilets: Four Things to Consider

The toilets may not be the most glamorous part of your establishment, but they’re still one of the most important features. 

Dirty toilets are unsafe and give an unappealing feel to the place at the very least, and given that there are several legal requirements you must adhere to, they could even put your business at legal risk. You also have a duty to keep these spaces clean and tidy not only from a hygiene perspective, but from an aesthetic one, too – an unclean environment lowers staff morale and is a huge red flag for potential customers.

Building a Solid Cleaning Schedule

The most important step towards bathroom hygiene is building a solid cleaning schedule. It’s very easy to slip up with cleaning one or two days in a row and experience a snowball effect, so a small amount of effort each day goes a long way. 

High-touch areas like toilets, taps, and door handles should be disinfected several times per day, and whoever does the cleaning will need to be provided with the equipment necessary to do their job (commercial cleaning solutions, colour-coded mops and cloths, protective clothing, and so on). 

Deep cleans should also be periodically scheduled to ensure optimal hygiene throughout the year. 

Good Hand Care

Workplace hand hygiene is a key element of bathroom cleanliness. The easiest way for germs to spread is via people’s hands, so it’s essential to have a strategy that involves sanitation tools and signage to encourage people to exercise good etiquette. 

High-quality soap dispensers in the toilets are a must, and it’s also prudent to fix hand sanitisation stations throughout the offices and hallways if you can. You’ll need places for people to adequately dry their hands aswell, but avoid towels as they harbour bacteria. Instead, go for dedicated electric hand dryers or a paper towel dispenser. 

Staying On Top Of Supplies

You can have the best cleaning routine in the world, but if you don’t keep a careful eye on your supply room, it’s easy for things to get on top of you. 

Regular restocking checks are a must and should be part of the daily cleaning routine, and you’ll need a check list to ensure you don’t miss anything important. 

Staff Training

And finally, there’s staff training. Everyone must do their bit to make sure the toilets are clean. You should encourage people to report problems (signage in the toilets works best) and have a list of rules written up that all staff are to adhere to. 

Some staff should also go through more formal training involving personal protective equipment (PPE) and that which involves waste handling.
