We measured the word count of hundreds of nonfiction book summaries. The median takes 8.6 minutes to read, about 3% of the time the original book takes. Full data inside.

Key finding: The median nonfiction book summary in our library is 2,049 words, or 8.6 minutes to read. The average full-length nonfiction book is around 70,000 words, so a typical summary takes about 3% of the time of the book.
The data
We counted the words in the full-length book summaries in the Sumizeit library and in their short "5-minute" versions. Podcast and short-form content was not included. Reading time uses 238 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed for nonfiction reported in a 2019 meta-analysis (Brysbaert, Journal of Memory and Language).

What this means
- You can read a book idea over coffee. Seven in ten full summaries take under 10 minutes.
- Hard books take longer. The longest summaries (20+ minutes) are dense, argument-heavy titles where cutting too much loses the point.
- A year of daily reading is small. Reading one median summary a day for a year is about 52 hours, about the time it takes to read 11 average books, but it covers 365 titles.

Book length is an estimate: most trade nonfiction runs 50,000 to 90,000 words. At 50,000 words the summary is about 4% of the book; at 90,000 it is about 2%.

Method and limits
- Source: The
bodyandquickReadfields of all published (not "coming soon") book summaries in the Sumizeit library on 8 October 2026. - Counting: HTML tags and entities were removed and whitespace-separated tokens counted. Summaries under 200 words (full) or 50 words (quick) were excluded as incomplete.
- Reading speed: 238 words per minute. Faster or slower readers, and audio at 1x speed (about 150 words per minute), will see different times.
- Book length: The 70,000-word figure is an assumption, not a measurement of the original books.
- Selection bias: This is our library only. It leans toward popular nonfiction and may not match other apps.
