Changes to Your Hearing Require Patience

Posted on 5/19/2026, 3:41:49 PM

Have you noticed that your hearing is not what it once was? Perhaps this is something new. Or maybe you have been asking the people around you to repeat themselves for quite some time. Either way, when your hearing changes, you should do something about it. From there, you need to be patient with the process. Here are some tips that will help you make the adjustment much easier.

Adjusting to the New Sound

One of the first things you should understand about hearing aids is that things will sound different. This is especially true if your hearing has diminished quite some time ago. All of a sudden, when things around you are clear once again, it might take you by surprise.

Another result of wearing hearing aids is experiencing your voice differently. You have probably heard your voice on recordings over the years and noticed that it sounds different than what you hear in your head. There is something else that occurs when you hear your own voice through hearing aids. It is called the occlusion effect. Basically, your hearing aids block the sound of your voice coming back into the devices and cause it to sound abnormally loud. It is important to talk with your audiologist about this if it affects you. They can help make adjustments and discuss why this happens. Do not stop wearing your hearing aids; get help instead.

Remembering to Put Them In

One of the big problems for some people is remembering to put them in each morning. This may seem like a no-brainer since they are amazing tools for improved hearing. But just as with anything in life, sometimes, you forget.

Take an active approach to help you remember. Place them on your bedside table so they are one of the first things you see each morning. If you prefer to keep them in your bathroom, set them near your toothbrush and make putting them in part of your morning routine. You can also set a daily calendar reminder to prompt you to put them in at the same time each day.

Request an Appointment

As with anything in life, sometimes, the first try is not the right fix. When you first begin to wear your new hearing aids, you have to take a breath and let time run its course. However, if something does not feel right, then perhaps something is wrong. When you notice that your devices are not comfortable or you still cannot hear quite right, it is time to contact your audiologist for assistance.

They will take steps to ensure your hearing aids fit properly and are operating as intended. Sometimes, adjustments need to be made. And in other situations, they will gently guide you on how to adjust your expectations and help you manage your hearing. Either way, they are the experts who are trained and ready to help you hear better and get on with your life.

Give yourself the gift of hearing and better health by making an appointment with your audiologist to be fitted for hearing aids. Once you have them, be patient. If you give them time, you will quickly come to appreciate them.
