But, it’s not always that easy. Sometimes our pain is so hard to ignore that we simply cannot function as we would like to.

If you’re feeling like that right now, hee are 5 tips to help you function more effectively through your pain (providing your doctor has okayed doing so)

  1. Make gentle movement a priority

When you are experiencing pain, staying still and not moving at all is often your first impulse, but it is rarely the right one, and if your physician has said you should move around a little then you really should. The key is to prioritize gentle movements like walking, yoga and swimming which will help to reduce the amount of stiffness you are feeling and stop your body from seizing up completely. Go at your own pace, and concentrate on progress, not perfection.

  1. Look into complementary support

Your doctor may well have prescribed you medication for your pain, but that does not mean you should not seek additional help if you want to be able to function more effectively through your pain. Things like CBD oil and TENS machines work for some people, while others find that having acupuncture every week can really minimise their pain and help them to get around and enjoy life more. It might be trial and error to see what works for you, btu the more support the better, right?

  1. Join a support group

Speaking of support, many people find that joining a support group can really help them to fiction through their pain because it shows them that they are not alone, and just having people to talk to can release lots of oxytocin that can help to relieve pain, too. Not only that but many people who go to pain support groups have their own inspirational stories of living life to the full despite their pain issues, and this can really inspire you to do the same too.

  1. Manage your energy wisely

Pain often demands more of your mental and physical energy than you realize. Planning your day to match your energy levels can help you stay functional without pushing yourself into a flare-up. Break tasks into smaller parts, take regular breaks, and prioritize the essentials. If you know mornings are rough, shift chores or responsibilities to later in the day. Think of your energy like a battery - you want to avoid hitting zero.

  1. Take it easy

Of course, there are going to be times when your pain is worse or you have already been very busty, and the last thing you want to do is push yourself too far, so do not be afraid to take some time out to relax when you really need to.

Don’t let your pain hold you back!
