About the Author

RuPaul Andre Charles is an American drag queen, singer, songwriter, actor, model, author, and television producer whose four-decade career has fundamentally reshaped the cultural standing of drag and queer performance in the United States and around the world. Born in San Diego in 1960 and raised in a Black working-class household, he moved to Atlanta in his late teens, where he honed his craft on the public-access program The American Music Show and in the city's punk and new-wave clubs, before relocating to New York City in the mid-1980s and establishing himself as a fixture of the downtown art and nightlife scene. His 1992 single Supermodel (You Better Work)" broke through to mainstream audiences, leading to a groundbreaking cosmetics contract with MAC and a long-running radio show with Michelle Visage. In 2009 he launched the reality competition series RuPaul's Drag Race, which has since aired in dozens of international versions, won fifteen Primetime Emmy Awards (including five consecutive wins for RuPaul personally as Outstanding Host), and turned a generation of drag performers into household names. He is also a New York Times bestselling author whose previous books include Lettin' It All Hang Out (1995) and GuRu (2018), and he is the host of the podcast RuPaul: What's the Tee? with Michelle Visage. His honors include induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Drama Desk Special Award, and recognition by Time magazine as one of the most influential people in the world. He lives between Los Angeles and Wyoming with his husband, Georges LeBar, whom he married in 2017 after more than twenty years together. The House of Hidden Meanings, published in 2024, debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list and is widely considered his most personal book.
