Max Tegmark is a physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where his academic research has focused on cosmology and the fundamental structure of the universe. Outside the classroom, he cofounded and leads the Future of Life Institute, a nonprofit focused on steering powerful technologies, artificial intelligence chief among them, toward outcomes that benefit humanity rather than endanger it. Life 3.0, published in 2017, grew out of that work, written to pull discussions about advanced AI out of academic and research circles and into the wider public conversation before the technology advances any further.
