Dr. Catherine Shanahan, often known as Dr. Cate, is a board certified family physician with more than two decades of clinical experience. She studied biology at Rutgers University before pursuing graduate work in biochemistry and genetics at Cornell, then earned her medical degree at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Shanahan practiced medicine in Hawaii for a decade, where she became interested in the dietary patterns and traditional food practices of her healthiest patients, an experience that shaped much of her later thinking on nutrition. She went on to develop the LA Lakers PRO Nutrition Program alongside longtime NBA athletic trainer Gary Vitti, a program that other championship level sports teams have since adopted.
Beyond The Fatburn Fix, Shanahan has written Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Food, Food Rules, and Dark Calories: How Vegetable Oils Destroy Our Health and How We Can Get It Back. Her work consistently returns to the idea that seed oil consumption and the metabolic damage it causes sit at the center of many chronic health conditions, including autoimmune disease, obesity, and diabetes. She currently runs a telehealth practice and shares ongoing research and patient guidance through her website, DrCate.com.
