About the Author

Cade Metz is a technology correspondent for The New York Times, where he covers artificial intelligence, driverless cars, robotics, virtual reality, and other emerging fields. Before joining the Times in 2017 he spent years as a senior staff writer at Wired and earlier worked at PC Magazine and The Register in London. That long run on the beat is what gives Genius Makers its texture. Metz was in the room for many of the moments he describes, including the AlphaGo match in Seoul, and he had access to the researchers and executives across Google, Facebook, Microsoft, DeepMind, OpenAI, and Baidu over more than a decade. Genius Makers, published in 2021, was his first book. His reporting has continued to shape public understanding of the industry, including coverage of large language models and the companies racing to build them. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
