About the Author

Brendan Kane built his career at the intersection of entertainment and digital strategy. He started at Lakeshore Entertainment, where he handled interactive media strategy for sixteen films that together grossed roughly six hundred eighty five million dollars worldwide, and he later served as Vice President of Digital at Paramount Pictures. Kane has said he ran one of the first influencer campaigns built specifically to promote a movie, and he later pioneered an early influencer campaign on YouTube back in 2007. Over the years, Kane has worked with companies including MTV, Viacom, Yahoo, Vice Magazine, IKEA, and Skechers, and he's built digital platforms and strategies for celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and Adriana Lima. He's also consulted for organizations like the NHL and the NFL Players Association. By his own account, the campaigns and platforms he's worked on have reached over fifty million people and generated tens of billions of views combined. In 2018, Kane set out to prove his own methods worked by growing his personal following to one million people in under thirty days, an experiment he later turned into his first book, One Million Followers. Hook Point followed as a deeper dive into the specific skill of capturing attention, and he later added a third title, The Guide to Going Viral, continuing to build out his ideas about audience growth and content strategy. Today, Kane runs Hook Point, his own consulting company, and works as a keynote speaker on digital strategy and brand engagement. What stands out about Kane's background, compared to a lot of marketing authors, is how much of it comes from entertainment rather than advertising in the traditional sense. Years spent promoting films and managing digital platforms for musicians and athletes gave him a front row seat to watching audiences make split second decisions about what to watch next, over and over, at a scale most marketers never see directly. Hook Point reads like an attempt to take what he learned watching those decisions happen and turn it into something any brand, however small, can actually use.
