Barry Schwartz is a professor of social theory and social action at Swarthmore College. His work sits where psychology and economics meet, and his main subject is how people make choices and what those choices do to their lives. Besides The Paradox of Choice, he has written seven other books and many articles for journals, magazines and newspapers. His better known titles include Why We Work, which grew out of his TED Talk of the same name and looks at what motivates people at their jobs, and Practical Wisdom, which he wrote with Kenneth Sharpe and which makes the case for using experience together with intelligence and compassion. He gave a widely watched TED Talk on the ideas in The Paradox of Choice, and his work has drawn coverage from The New York Times, The New Yorker and PBS NewsHour. The book was first published in 2004 by Harper Perennial, and a revised Kindle edition followed in 2009.
